Patlabor Wireless Network Towers to Be Sold

posted on by Jennifer Sherman
Devices inspired by anime/manga franchise to feature "ear" antennae, colorful LEDs

The automation components company M-System announced in the January issue of its MS Today web magazine that it will offer Patlabor wireless network towers. M-System received permission from Mobile Police Patlabor copyright holders to name the device after the anime and manga franchise.

The "intelligent tower" resembles Ingram robots from Patlabor with its movable "ear" antennae, colorful LED lights, and warning sirens. The devices stand about 67 centimeters (about 26 inches) tall and measures 60 millimeters (about 2.4 inches) in diameter. The four lights can display red, yellow, green, blue, and white indications. M-System will begin selling ethernet and CC-Link versions of the Patlabor towers this month and release a wireless LAN version in April.

The Patlabor franchise began in 1988 with Mamoru Oshii's original video anime (OVA) series. The series has inspired various manga, light novel, television anime, and anime film sequels and adaptations. Oshii's related Bankuruwase: Keishi-chō Keibi-bu Tokushu Sharyō Ni-ka (Shocking Upset: Metropolitan Police Special Vehicles Section 2) book also shipped last January.
