The Gundam.info portal site announced on Thursday that the Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky anime will get a 4K UltraHD Blu-ray Disc release in Japan on December 22. The release will feature the anime in 4K resolution with high-dynamic-range video, and will be the first release in the Gundam franchise to feature the video technology. The release will have English audio and English subtitle options.
The release will also include a video showing how director Kou Matsuo and the anime's staff engineered the video, and will also contain a three-minute video test sample from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, all engineered using the same 4K, HDR process.
Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky is a director's cut edition of the Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt net anime. Both anime are based on Yasuo Ohtagaki's Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt manga. The director's cut edition includes additional scenes.
Right Stuf released an import edition Blu-ray Disc of the director's cut with both English and Japanese audio tracks and in English, Japanese, French, Korean, and Chinese subtitles on July 2.
The net anime's first episode began streaming last December, and the fourth and final episode began streaming in April.
The story is set in the same One Year War in UC 0079 as the first Mobile Suit Gundam anime series, and it follows the battles between two ace pilots at the "Thunderbolt Sector," a shoal zone with numerous wrecks of space colonies and warships.
